The thing most people don't get is that software engineers are not running the computers. They write software that runs. They are like construction workers. If they did a good job, the building can be kept up by a much smaller maintenance crew. twitter.com/mocutobi/statu…

What you really cut is the available workforce to continue to improve the system, add new features, and so on. If you laid the foundations well, a much smaller team can also do that. But you're much more restricted in what you can do. And it shows.
